Partners in the STEM Pipeline: Approaches to Involve High Schools in STEM Research

Evan Glazer
Principal
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology

Many research universities, like GMU and the Krasnow Institute, provide avenues for students to engage in research activities with professors and graduate students in their labs. Efforts have been made at GMU to support motivated undergraduates and even high school students to inspire their career interest in STEM. This mentoring and experiential learning approach appears effective in stimulating interest for these limited number of students. We must consider, then, how research institutions can take additional steps to broaden their impact on the STEM pipeline. This presentation will offer a variety of research partnership approaches currently in practice at our local STEM high school for consideration and discussion.
